Yogas in astrology part 9, mutual exchange between first and fifth house, Maha Yoga

In continuation to my previous articles on analyzing yogas in astrology…

Exchange between first and fifth houses

In vedic astrology, mutual exchange between first and fifth houses generate Maha Yoga; and, as per the general guidelines (provided in Phaladeepika), natives born with Maha Yoga in their horoscope may wear good clothes and ornaments and may be awarded with recognition and fame. They may enjoy authority over many people; may have comforts of vehicle; and, may also enjoy happiness from son.

These results, as mentioned in previously pressed articles, are general in nature; and, the actual impact of this exchange between first and fifth houses will depend upon many important factors including the potency and disposition of the relevant planets and houses.

First house of the horoscope signifies self, physique, nature, strength, intellect, fame and success etc. and the Fifth house is related with knowledge, learning, progeny, progress in career, professional skills, soul, easy financial gains, stomach etc.

Therefore, the results of first and fifth house exchange are very likely to be related with these aspects of life. The nature and potency of these results may, however, depend upon the disposition of these planets in the respective horoscope.

For example, strongly disposed lords of first and fifth house may bless a person with good education, high level of intellect, and success in professional arena. While, if these relevant planets are afflicted/weak; then, despite the formation of this Mahayoga (exchange between first and fifth house), the native may experience inauspicious results like poor education, obstructions/failures in career and weak health.

Similarly, if these planets are well disposed and safe from inauspicious planetary influences, this exchange between first and fifth houses may bless the native with reputed status, fame, minister-ship, authority and high posts in the society. While, afflicted and weak disposition of these planets may cause loss of repute, humiliation and weak or ordinary status in society.

Well disposed lords of first and fifth house (under exchange with each other) may also bless with good health, safety from enemies, easy financial gains and happiness from progeny. However, weak and/or afflicted disposition of these planets may result in weak health, financial volatility and unhealthy relationship with children or other inauspicious results related with progeny.

And, as mentioned in the previously pressed articles, the disposition of these planets in Navamsha and other relevant divisions may also have a significant say in determining the overall outcome of this Maha Yoga (“Exchange between first and fifth house of horoscope”).

The best results may come during operation of relevant operational period of strong and well placed planets. The following example charts may be helpful in better understanding and clarity on analyzing the results of Yogas.

Exchange between first and fifth house of horoscope

Example Horoscope One

In this Scorpio Ascendant Horoscope, there is an exchange between Mars and Jupiter. Fifth house lord Jupiter is placed in first house along with debilitated Moon and exalted Ketu. And, the lord of first house Mars is in fifth house along with tenth lord Sun.

As per its lordship over ninth house of the Ascendant Chart, the nature of Moon is friendly and supportive for Scorpio Ascendant; however, its debilitated state is reducing its potency. The influence of Ketu is also not desirable; however, there are no other inauspicious influences on Jupiter. Thus, the impact of Ketu (South Node) may not be severe and with the aid of auspicious but limited support of Moon, Jupiter may be able to exercise its supportive influence on the first house.

The union of Mars with the Sun is under mixed aspectual influences; the aspect of Ketu is cruel while the aspect of Jupiter is supportive. There are no planets in first and fifth houses of the Navamsha division; while, Mars and Jupiter are united in friendly zodiac Leo (in second house).

The native enjoyed most of the auspicious results of this Mahayoga (exchange between first and fifth houses). He had good education; success in business followed by successful career in politics. Some impact of Ketu (South Node) was also there due to which the temperament is strong and aggressive. The chart belongs to American politician Tom DeLay.

Example Horoscope Two

This horoscope belongs to Italian Actress, Television Presenter and Radio Host Sarah Maestri. The Ascendant is Leo whose lord Sun is having a house exchange relationship with Jupiter. Jupiter is joined by Mars and Rahu in the first house of which the influence of Mars is supportive while Rahu (North Node) is cruel and deceptive in nature. Sun, placed in fifth house of natal chart, is under mixed aspectual influences from Jupiter and Rahu. Jupiter is having a Vargottama disposition in Navamsha division (i.e. occupying same zodiac sign Leo in both natal and Navamsha division); while, the Sun is occupying Taurus sign in eleventh house of Navamsha and safe from any inauspicious planetary influences.

Despite the bad/weak disposition of tenth lord Venus, this house exchange relationship between first and fifth house in Sarah Maestri horoscope blessed her with most of the auspicious results of this Mahayoga like good education, successful career, good status and fame.

Example Horoscope Three

In this example horoscope, the first house lord Mercury is having a house exchange relationship with fifth lord Saturn. Mercury is combust and afflicted by the Sun (lord of twelfth house) in fifth house; while Saturn (placed in first house of the natal chart) is safe from any inauspicious planetary influences. There are no supportive planetary influences on these two planets (Mercury and Saturn).

There is an inauspicious union of Jupiter with Mars and Rahu in twelfth house; and, Venus (lord of second and ninth houses) is afflicted by Ketu in sixth house of the natal chart.

Despite the formation of Mahayoga (exchange between first and fifth house), the native did not have any strong advantage. Rather, the impact of inauspicious union (of Jupiter with Mars and Rahu) had its say due to which the native was convicted of murder during Mahadasa of Jupiter.

In the Navamsha division, Saturn has lost the positional advantage and badly placed in sixth house along with the Moon under cruel aspects from Mars and Rahu ; and, Mercury is badly placed in twelfth house under aspect of Ketu.

I hope the readers may find this article useful in understanding the appropriate approach for analyzing the yogas in vedic astrology.
