The Neech Bhang Rajyoga means the cancellation of debilitated state of a planet. Usually, planets are considered weak, if they occupy their debilitated zodiac sign.
I stand to be corrected; but, I could not find any mention of Neech Bhanga Raj Yoga in Brihad Parashara Hora Shashtra. The Phala Deepika and Sarawali, however, do contain information about the planetary placement, wherein the strength is obtained by planets in their debilitation sign. There are many different and even controversial thoughts of eminent astrologers about the Neech Bhanga Raj Yoga. As per Phaladeepkia, some of the potent planetary placements, generating the Neech Bhang Raj Yoga are mentioned below:
If a planet occupies its debilitation sign and the lord of the sign occupied by the debilitated planet is placed in angular house from Moon and at the same time the lord of the sign in which the debilitated planet gets exalted is also placed in angular house from the Moon; it cancels the debilitation of the said planet. For example, if the Sun is debilitated in Libra zodiac sign of the horoscope; then above mentioned two conditions should meet for generating the cancelation of the Sun.
- Lord of the sign occupied by the Sun i.e. Venus, which rules over Libra zodiac sign should be placed in angular house from the Moon i.e. in any of the fourth, seventh and tenth houses from the Moon.
- And, at the same time lord of the sign where the debilitated planets gets exalted i.e. the Mars (the Sun gets exalted in Aries) which rules over Aries zodiac sign should also be placed in an angular house from the Moon.
If the above two conditions are met, it will generate the cancellation of the debilitation for the Sun.
One another combination of planetary placement, which renders strength to a debilitated planet is related with mutual placement of the planet in whose sign the debilitated planet is placed; and the planet which rules over exalted sign of the debilitated planet. In the example given above, this combination is related to the mutual placement of Venus and Mars. It has been stated in Phaladeepika that if these two planets are placed in angular houses from each other, this will generate cancellation of the debilitation. Like if Mars and Venus are placed in fourth, seventh or tenth houses from each other, then the debilitation of the Sun gets cancelled.
In addition to above, one another condition which causes the cancellation of debilitation is related with the dispositor of the debilitated planet. It says that if the dispositor of the debilitated planet is having full aspect over the debilitated planet – it will cancel the debilitation. Now, this condition is not possible with the debilitation of the Sun as such it goes debilitated in Libra zodiac sign; and in no case the Venus can be in Aries zodiac sign when the Sun is in Libra. This is so because, the planets Mercury and Venus always remain in the nearby zodiac signs of the Sun or within the same zodiac sign wherein the Sun is placed.
The fourth planetary placement suggested by Lord Mantreshawara for having cancellation of debilitation is also related with place of the dispositor of debilitated planet. It is very similar to the condition no 1; the difference is only that the placement of the planets is to be considered from Ascendant in place of the Moon.
In practical application of vedic astrology, the cancellation of the debilitation does not work significantly. There are horoscopes, wherein despite having the required planetary placement for cancellation of the debilitation, the good results of the neecha bhanga yoga are missing; and the person is found to be suffering on account of the weakness caused by the debilitated planet. The functioning and applicability of the principles regarding cancellation of debilitation are found operational when the Lagna lord or the ninth lord are well placed and strong in the horoscope; and the person concerned is not having inauspicious planetary dasa.
